Watersave Network

WATERSAVE Network was established with a primary aim to develop a close interaction between a range of stakeholders with a responsibility and interest in researching, implementing and promoting water efficiency and demand management measures. The network includes activities aimed at enhancing interaction between stakeholders from water industry, research organisations, housing associations, environmental consultants, architects, planners and policymakers from government organisations. The network, since its inception, has been focused to achieve the following five objectives:

Communication: to facilitate communication and co-operation, exchange of ideas/insights, data, methods and models between academic and industrial partners

Dissemination: to improve the speed and relevance of the dissemination of new ideas, solutions, methodologies, and data, and to improve feedback from end users through the innovative use of electronic communication;

Mobility and cross-fertilisation: to enhance the mobility and interaction of personnel between academic sub-disciplines, between university departments and between academic and industrial communities, and to foster and encourage twinning and merging of individual ideas;

Development: to allow development of new research ideas/initiatives and to facilitate response to calls for proposals (national and international)

Excellence: to promote and encourage excellence in research in the emerging areas of water conservation and recycling at both the national and international level.

The network was initially funded with seed funding from Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council followed by a contributions by the major water services providers and the Environment Agency for further three years.

To date, the network has undertaken the following activities:

  • organized six-monthly meetings of specialist groups to discuss and disseminate information on current trends in the research, case studies and achievements of water conservation and recycling initiatives from the industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. This has resulted in the presentation and discussion on over 60 national and international projects on water efficiency.
  • facilitated wider dissemination of the network outputs and provided access to other databases, organisations and professionals in the subject by developing the network website
  • Produced state of the art critical review on the technical, social and legal aspects of water conservation and recycling in the UK. This has been published as a book on Water Demand Management by International Water Association.
  • Organised two international conferences with dedicated sessions on water demand management
  • Contributed towards the preparation of research proposals and through research grants took part in the execution of research projects on grey water recycling, environmental and economic implications of water efficiency in buildings, rainwater harvesting, water consumption trends and demand forecasting.
  • Invited experts from overseas to share their experience with the UK audience.
