Workshop on

Statistical Properties of Rare Events

27 and 28 September 2010

Mathematics Research Institute, CEMPS, University of Exeter

The workshop is organised by the Centre for Systems, Dynamics and Control in the Mathematics Research Institute and will take place at the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences (CEMPS), in the Harrison Building. The workshop aims to bring together researchers using dynamical systems and ergodic theoretic approaches to understanding the statistics of recurrence and rare events, namely "extremes."

Programme

Monday 27th Sept

All talks will be in room Harrison 106 (first floor up from Reception level).

  • 11:00. Arrival+Coffee.
  • 11:30-12:20. Dalia Terhesiu (University of Surrey, UK): Mixing rates for infinite measure preserving systems.
  • 12:20-13:45 Buffet lunch.
  • 13:45-14:35. Henk Bruin (University of Surrey, UK): Return time staistics in non-uniformly hyperbolic systems.
  • 14:40-15:30. Sandro Vaienti (University of Marseille, Luminy, France) Ergodic properties of non-Markov multidimensional maps.
  • 15:30-16:00 Break for Tea.
  • 16:00-16:50 Matt Nicol (University of Houston, USA). Borel-Cantelli lemmas for hyperbolic dynamical systems and applications to extremes.

    Tuesday 28th Sept

Presentations/discussions in room LT3, Laver Building (next to Harrison Building). Talks will be more of an informal nature discussing ideas of common interest to those in dynamical systems, statistics and climate reaearch.

  • 9:00-10:30. Mark Holland/Chris Ferro (Exeter) will lead an informal discussion on open problems in the dynamics of extremes. Applications to statistics and climate research will be discussed: a particular topic of interest includes "robustness of extremes". (Break for coffee will be included in this discussion).
  • 10:30-11:00 Closing talk: Sebastian Wieczorek (Exeter). Rate-dependent tipping points: The example of the compost-bomb instability.

  • Please see this webpage for future updates to the programme.

    Contact/Registration

The meeting is open to all interested but we do require a small registration fee of 15 pounds for those who wish to partake in the buffet lunch on 27th September and the teas/coffees. Please inform by Wednesday 22nd September if you wish to contribute. Payment can be made on the day and can be made by account transfer (for internal participants only), otherwise make out a cheque payable to the "University of Exeter".
