Prof. Zoran Kapelan is Professor of Water Systems Engineering and Head of the Water and Environment Group at the University of Exeter with 28 years of research and consulting experience in various water engineering disciplines, both in the UK and abroad. He graduated at the University of Belgrade (Faculty of Civil Engineering) in 1989 as the best student in his class and obtained his PhD in Engineering at the University of Exeter in 2002. Prior to joining the University of Exeter in 1999 he worked for 10 years as a full-time consultant in the water industry abroad and was responsible for the design of various complex water engineering systems, including water and wastewater infrastructure systems, flood/river control systems, irrigation/drainage systems and systems of large open reservoirs with dams and hydro power plants. His research interests and expertise are centred on the development of novel engineering and informatics based methodologies addressing a wide range of issues in urban water systems (both water and wastewater). Professor Kapelan pioneered the award winning technology for automated detection of bursts, equipment failures and other events in distribution systems by using Artificial Intelligence and big data analytics in real-time. This technology is now used companywide in United Utilities benefiting its over 7 million customers and leading to major savings via reduced operational costs. He is/was the principal/co-investigator on more than 40 EPSRC, EU and industry funded projects. Prof. Kapelan is an IWA Fellow, Fellow of CIWEM, member of the EWRI Emerging and Innovative Technologies Task Committee, the ASCE WDSA Standing Committee and multiple IWA specialist and other groups. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor for the Water Resources Research and Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management (ASCE). Prof. Kapelan has given keynotes and invited talks around the world and has over 350 technical publications.
