Chapters 8 and 9 of Spiegel (1992) explain estimation clearly albeit in a rather old fashioned approach. They also introduce briefly the important idea of resampling which has not been covered in this chapter. Chapter 3 of Emery and Thomson (1997) give a clear and more in-depth discussion of estimation as used in oceanography. Von Storch and Zwiers (1999) explains the L-moment estimation method based on the published articles of Hosking and collaborators.
