- Lancaster University - BSc in Computer Science, tutored and influenced by Prof John Self
- Exeter University - PhD in Intelligent Computer-Aided Instruction, supervised by Prof Ajit Narayanan; several years later
became a lecturer in the Computer Science Department at Exeter University with initial research interests in Expert Systems, User Modelling, and Intelligent Tutoring Systems
- developed a prototype system, PrologSpace, that displayed Prolog programs in 3-D space and allowed the user, a Prolog programmer, to move about the graphical objects that represented Prolog programming constructs
- became increasingly interested in Program Visualization and its potential for computer-aided instruction for students learning programming
- developed an animation system called Goofy, based on John Stasko's Polka, that enabled students to present their own visualizations of programming constructs
- undertook research activities that examined useful visual abstractions for the programmer
- supervised masters and doctoral graduates
- taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Human-Computer Interaction and Introductory Programming. Left the University of Exeter as Senior Lecturer in 1996.

- Logica (Cambridge) Ltd - Principal then Managing Consultant of the HCI group, leading R&D projects utilising Artificial Intelligence techniques for Engineering Industry Training Board, MoD, European Space Agency
- Learning Tree International - Faculty Consultant, delivering HCI courses in London, Sweden, France, and Italy.
