Abstract. "The number theoretic notions of multiplicative functions and of Dirichlet convolution are shown to have natural physical interpretations in the context of certain quantum systems, the prototype of which is Einstein's oscillator model of solids. Various number theoretic results are obtained using physical insights, and Dirichlet convolution is shown to correspond to the loss of information when distinguishable excitations are treated as indistinguishable. An especially appealing feature is that the concepts involved are both mathematically fundamental and physically natural."
