We propose a new mechanism of pattern formation in bacterial populations. In particular, this mechanism can create stationary and moving concentric bacterial rings. We also suggest a mathematical model of this mechanism, taking into account chemotactic motion of bacteria and local changes in the environment they cause. We illustrate this by the results of experiments and numerical simulations of the mathematical model.
